ISSVA World Congress 2024

ISSVA World Congress May 7th to 10th 2024

The ISSVA (International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies) congress was held in Madrid from May 7 to 10, 2024.

The national reference center for Superficial Vascular Anomalies (SVA) was of course represented, with Dr. Annouk Bisdorff-Bresson a member of the ISSVA Board of Directors and Scientific Committee.

In the "primary" part of the congress, Dr. Bisdorff-Bresson gave a lecture on the diagnosis of vascular malformations based on imaging, explaining the importance of correlating imaging with the clinic and of using different imaging modalities, in particular ultrasound/Doppler mapping. Related, his poster produced with Dr. Victoire Roblot et al. " Diagnostic pitfalls: Superficial soft tissue lymphoma mimicking a venous malformation" illustrated the importance of taking clinical data and medical history into account in the differential diagnosis of venous malformations versus soft tissue lymphomas.

Finally, Dr Michel Wassef - referent anatomopathologist at Lariboisière Hospital - and Dr Annouk Bisdorff-Bresson took part in a round-table discussion with experts on "difficult", complex AVS cases.

Among other interventions at the Lariboisière hospital center, Dr Claude Laurian presented the feasibility of replacing hip and knee prostheses in cases of extensive venous malformations the following day. He shared a "trick": the use of hot wax as a pre-operative "sclerosing" agent.

Other presentations included a poster by Dr Franck El-Sissy (anatomopathologist) et al, which demonstrated the feasibility of using liquid biopsies in AVS to detect somatic mutations in circulating "free" DNA. Dr Olivia Boccara et al showed the usefulness of the oral anticoagulant DOAC in children with painful VD.

This sharing of the latest data on care and research will have enriched the participants' practice and opened up new perspectives ... with the next congress scheduled for next year, in Paris!
